Elder Abuse Awareness Month

As a community, together we can ensure that older adults and people with disabilities are protected and can live a life free from abuse and neglect of any kind.

In recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month, observed during the month of June, the Alameda County Social Services Agency's Department of Adult and Aging Services has launched a series of Public Service Announcements to broaden community awareness of this important issue. Seniors, family, members, caregivers, and professionals are encouraged to learn the signs of abuse and how to report it, when suspected. As a community, together we can ensure that older adults and people with disabilities are protected and can live a life free from abuse and neglect of any kind. We hope that the messages conveyed in these videos will inspire you take action.

Financial Abuse

It is not uncommon for elders to experience financial abuse at the hands of caregivers, family members, close friends, or even complete strangers. Signs of financial abuse may include missing money, lack of necessities, giving away of possessions, and signing of legal documents.

Self-Neglect

More than half of the 6,000+ reports of elder abuse received annually by our Agency's Adult Protective Services are for cases of self-neglect by seniors whose basic needs are not being met or who are suffering from social isolation

Ombudsman Services

Our Agency's Ombudsman Services ensure that residents of long-term care facilities are receiving the services to which they are entitled, including quality care. The program can be contacted at: 510-638-6878.
