Older Adults and Disabled

We provide assistance and care for older adults and individuals with disabilities

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month!

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

It is a wonder to age! To journey through life and see the beauty of the human experience is a gift that is new each day and should be protected and valued within our community. Today, 8.5% of the world’s population—approximately 617 million people—are aged 65 and over. This percentage is projected to jump to nearly 17% of the world’s population by 2050, totaling 1.6 billion people. It is clear that we are living longer, and with the passage of Assembly Bill 135 in January 2022, the definition of “elder adult” in California changed from age 65 to age 60, thus bringing more individuals into the fold. In Alameda County, older adults currently account for 11.1% of the County’s population (and growing!). The task of assuring that these older adults are safe and thriving in our community is of great importance. June 15th is acknowledged as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, offering us all an opportunity to cast our attention towards the needs of older adults.

Come and join us.

COVID-19 has made abundantly clear the need to pay close attention to our most vulnerable populations. Growing a workforce that is inclusive, diverse and reflective of our client base is a real priority for Alameda County.

Our Department of Adult and Aging Services is currently seeking qualified Social Worker II candidates for In-Home Supportive Services. Social Worker II incumbents assess referrals for service program assistance and provide guidance, counseling and the most appropriate supportive social services to clients; collect and evaluate client socio-economic information and data; manage the on-going responsibility for a caseload of applicants or clients of services, and perform other related duties as required. Click here for more information and to apply. The filing deadline is July 12, 2022 at 5:00 pm.

Come and meet us.

If you visit the Alameda County Fair happening June 17th through July 10th, be sure to stop by the information booth for the Alameda County Social Services Agency’s Department of Adult and Aging Services, located in the exhibition hall nearest the carnival rides.

The Department of Adult and Aging Services offers a coordinated service delivery system that protects, supports, and advocates for an aging population. We value an individual's choice to age in place with dignity and respect, while paying closely to their individual needs and wants.
